Charles R. Davis is the kind of journalist who finds the story by going where other reporters aren’t looking, which, as it turns out, is Facebook. Having written for the Columbia Journalism Review, The Daily Beast, and The New Republic, he now runs The Redoubt, an independent outlet doing original reporting from Vienna, where he is currently studying. He is also living proof that insomnia and a willingness to scroll right-wing filth at 2 a.m. remains an underrated investigative method.
Scroll long enough, and you’ll find that on May 30th, just south of Porto, Portugal, some of the world’s leading fascists gathered to discuss something called remigration, the Trump regime and many white supremacists’ preferred euphemism for removing every non-white person from Europe and the United States. It is, as Charles explained, “a Nazi-based conspiracy theory,” something that used to matter.
The event was called the Remigration Summit 2026. It was advertised openly on Facebook and Instagram. Its organizer, Afonso Gonçalves of the far-right group Reconquista, left no interpretive ambiguity:
Among the speakers: a Belgian fascist convicted of Holocaust denial. The founder of a Swiss neo-Nazi group who describes his own politics as National Socialism.
And Gregory Bovino — the former U.S. Border Patrol commander who presided over the operation in Minneapolis that left Renee Good and Alex Pretti dead — announced as the special guest. He confirmed his attendance on his own social media. Just before he did, he posted a photo of himself giving what any person who has heard of Nazi Germany would recognize as a Nazi salute.
Charles found the summit the way he found Tucker Carlson’s 9/11 truth documentary running $3.2 million in Meta ads: by taking a look.
The whole thing was in public. The Telegram channel. The Instagram confirmations. The Discord, where Reconquista members exchanged explicit antisemitism and Holocaust jokes. None of it hidden. “I don’t want to take too much credit,” Charles told me, “for digging out information that is right there in plain sight.”
That’s also, he said, what’s alarming.
Stefano Forte — president of the New York Young Republican Club, a Fox News–certified “GOP leader,” operator of a multimillion-dollar PAC dedicated to purging public schools of what he calls wokeness — also confirmed his appearance on Instagram. Forte has been building the transatlantic neo-fascist alliance piece by piece: 20 AfD members at his winter gala, a speaking appearance at an AfD-affiliated think tank in Germany. When Charles reached the New York Young Republicans for comment, their spokesperson said the club would “never apologize for standing alongside our European brothers and sisters.”
The AfD isn’t even concealing its association with Martin Sellner now — the Austrian extremist who popularized the great replacement theory, which has motivated mass shooters from Pittsburgh to Christchurch. Charles noted that recently, a secret meeting between Sellner and AfD lawmakers set off protests across Germany.
“I don’t see this leading to the same sort of outrage,” Charles said, “that it would have even two years ago.”
The accumulation of atrocities is designed to defeat coverage. There’s no coherent narrative to follow. The story is whatever happens that day, and what happened that day was something else. USAID deaths don’t get covered because there are too many of them, they’re not bombs, and they’re just people starving. The Remigration Summit doesn’t get covered because the fascists didn’t bother to hide it, which makes it feel less like a scoop and more like scenery.
Charles had a sharper way of naming what’s underneath that.
Trump’s genius, if we’re using that word, is that he doesn’t pretend he’s innocent. His fans call that honesty. What it actually does is license everyone downstream. You don’t need secret meetings anymore. You can have a whole damn conference, advertise it on Instagram, and the refusal to be covert is itself the armor.
Umberto Eco saw the mechanics of this in his 1995 essay “Ur-Fascism.” One of the features Eco named is the fascist movement’s deliberate use of internal contradiction as a tool. They call Nazis leftists. They invoke the Holocaust as an insult while hosting Holocaust deniers. They claim to fight antisemitism while the organizers of their summits quote Weimar-era eliminationists. Each contradiction functions as a dare: call it out and you look like the one who’s confused.
This is how the press gets neutralized even without being directly threatened — by being made to feel that clarity itself requires taking sides.
Rational souls like Charles feel we need a legal document certifying someone is a Nazi before we say so out loud. This time they removed that problem. Bovino posted the salute himself, on the way to meet the Holocaust deniers, and stood for photos with Martin Sellner. They’re handing us the document. The only question is whether anyone in the press cares.
