Donald Trump is a walking abortion ban
If he gets the chance, the forced birther won’t stop until abortion is banned nationally for the rest of your life.
“Democrats won big on abortion in 2022. Will it work again this year?”
That’s the question my local paper, in a state where a ballot measure codifying Roe v. Wade won by 13% just over a year ago, is asking today:
The subject was a winner for the party across the country in 2022. It seems they’re willing to bet on it again come November 2024, with Democratic politicians already sounding the alarm on what could happen to access should Republican Donald Trump win the election this fall.
But whether that plan will be successful hinges on one thing according to those closely following the topic: messaging.
This framing is more about the odds than the stakes, but the article makes a fair point by allowing Mary Ruth Ziegler, the Martin Luther King Jr. professor of law with California’s UC Davis, to state the risk Democrats face:
“You hear Democrats tell the story, it’s more of like, ‘we’re on the right side of this and they’re on the wrong side, so you should go for us,’ which, I think a lot of people respond ... ‘well, we already have abortion rights here, so it’s not going to matter in our lives who’s in the White House’,” she said.
And new polling from Data for Progress adds some evidence to this concern, with only 48% of voters believing he will pursue a national abortion ban and only 24% blaming him for new abortion bans.
The piece then goes on to explain all the ways Trump himself will take away reproductive freedom, all of which have been promised by his allies:
These include:
“A national abortion ban is coming unless Biden is reelected.”
They clock this as unlikely, but if Trump has a Republican House and Senate? Absolutely. What about the filibuster? Ha. Like they’ll give it a second thought.A Trump administration would likely use executive action not just to ban “abortion-producing medication, but even the act of mailing surgical tools that doctor and hospitals could use in the abortion process.”
Democrats need to explain this constantly, because it’s inevitable if Trump wins, yet almost impossible to imagine right now. Kind of like Roe being overturned was in 2016. In case you didn’t know “abortion-producing medication” is the most common and safest form of abortion in the United States. Trump will, on day one, begin to effectively ban the most common form of abortion. This is why people who care about reproductive rights are already telling you to stock up on abortion pills now.“That’s also the case for ordering the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services secretary to override the U.S. Food And Drug Administration’s approval/rule making decisions on medication like mifepristone, a pill capable of ending a pregnancy less than 10 weeks along.”
This is just part of the above point but more evidence to the basic reality that a Trump administration would do anything in its power and not in its power to ban abortion. And they’ll get away with it for the unstated reason why Trump is the biggest threat to our freedoms.
THE SUPREME COURT
If Trump wins, he can lock in five votes against Roe v. Wade for the rest of your life by simply replacing Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas with much younger freaks who hate the idea of women controlling their own bodies.
And if he gets the chance to replace any of the three Justices still on the Court who opposed Dobbs, the decision that ended Roe, or Ketanji Brown Jackson – LORD FORBID – the Republicans on the Supreme Court will ban abortion nationally, which is obviously the way Republican politicians hope this will happen.
The truth is Democrats need to master their values-based messaging around abortion rights and come up with a real plan to restore Roe in a way that can’t be quickly overruled.
But we need to stress the obvious here – Donald Trump is a walking abortion ban.
He’s the reason the bans exist and he will immediately try to ban most if not all abortions because his base will settle for nothing else. He’ll also back “some sort of punishment for the woman” should he get his chance. But that’s also a fair way to describe what life will be like should he ever get near the White House again.
The man who began his career in Republican politics as THE Birther wants to end it as THE Forced Birther.
