You may have noticed my fixation on the largest intentional uninsuring of Americans in history. The press may largely ignore how GOP policies will lead to some 15 million people losing their health insurance in less than a decade. But I can’t because it’s still the way Donald Trump is most likely to kill you or your family.
And the impact on the entire American health care system—already a gilded torture chamber of extreme luxury and pathetic indifference—will worsen nearly all of our lives in a way few can ignore once the worst of the Republican cuts from 2025 hit next January.
Last year, Senate Democrats circulated a list of hospitals likely to close thanks to brutal health care cuts in the Trump budget passed entirely with Republican votes. I expected to see the threat to these crucial public health resources resound. And if Democrats are doing it, I’m not catching it. Are you?
I wanted to speak to Charles Gaba—the one-man shop behind ACASignups.net and the direct-donation marvel Blue26.org—about the story Democrats need to tell about this massive attack on our nation’s healthcare, AKA our well-being and dignity.
And he offers a reasonable theory that I hope is correct: Republicans won’t be able to run from their massive cuts and cruelty much longer.
Up to 10 million have already lost insurance, and Republicans aren’t going to be able to sweep these cuts under the rug much longer—especially when voters start opening their mailboxes this fall to find another wave of double-digit premium hikes for even less coverage. And tens of millions more may get the first whiffs of how Republicans play to throw millions off Medicaid as they make the program less of a safety net for us all.
